What is NVidia Ray Tracing

If you’re a gamer, then the chances are you’ve heard of ray tracing, but you might not know exactly what it means or why it’s a big deal. We’re here to help you find out. In its simplest form, ray tracing is a system that’s used to enhance the lighting in games. This is done in a variety of different ways. It’s used in everything from reflections to shadows both in the gaming environment and on items within it.

List of Games which uses Ray Tracing GPU

The ray tracing hardware acceleration hardware built into its GeForce RTX line of graphics cards. All of these games are available in the market, but you’ll really make sure there’s a GeForce RTX GPU in your Workstation PC.

  • System requirements to all GPUs shows that DXR Games required workstation with graphics card that is capable of DX 11 or OpenGL 4.5.
  • To get the best visual graphical experience on DXR Games, aim to have a GPU that has at least 2 GB GPU RAM is in your workstation.
  • Only top performance graphics cards currently available today, will probably allow you to play these games

We are advised that 4 year old graphics cards should be able to run games, but there could be a few exceptions to this rule. These graphics cards are also expensive and put ray tracing out of range of most gamers unless they were willing to splash out for cutting edge tech.

Note that most games do not officially support laptop graphics cards, but nowadays many laptop graphics solutions are capable of running modern games. Whether desktop graphics cards or laptop, try searching for your graphics card to compare against the graphics card requirements chart below.

  • Geforce RTX 2080 Ti 12 GB
  • Geforce RTX 2080 8GB
  • Geforce RTX 2070 Super 8GB
  • Geforce RTX 2070 8GB
  • Geforce RTX 2060 Super 8GB
Battlefield V:

Battlefield series dives into World War II with a bang first-person shooter game. Good on pretty light on the effects, mostly adding them for water reflections, fires, and explosions.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

A single-player story campaign, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare pushes boundaries and breaks rules the way only Modern Warfare can. Good on pretty light on the effects, mostly adding them for water reflections, fires, and explosions.

Control:

Control is less a horror game style of third person action with a strange supernatural tale with best Force powers. Control games have gone all-in on a fully ray-traced render path on the end of spectrum.

Deliver Us the Moon:

A sci-fi thriller where players are make their way around space stations and moon outposts in an attempt to save mankind from a dying Earth.

Metro Exodus (and The Two Colonels DLC):

A new adventure that saw players explore a healing world above ground, travelling through non-linear environments and creating a better future for series protagonist  colonels Artyom and his allies. The Two Colonels is a love-letter to the past series.

Minecraft RTX:

Minecraft RTX is Developed by NVIDIA and Mojang for Minecraft. Everywhere from the rays of light that come through windows and skylights to glowing bricks that color the light of various rooms and shiny reflective surfaces.  In one area, we had to navigate from block to light-emitting block, stepping on them in the correct order to open up the ending. Without ray tracing turned on, it’s impossible to complete the puzzle since the correct block emits light.

Quake II RTX:

Quake II RTX is a cutting-edge, ray-traced reimagining of id software’s old school classic, by NVIDIA’s Lightspeed Studios. Global lighting effects, including realistic reflections, refraction, shadows, ambient occlusion and global illumination are a result of the path-traced simulation of light.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider:

This game is an action-adventure game played from a third-person perspective; players take on the role of Lara Croft as she explores environments across the continents of Central and South America. The game features the largest hub in the franchise; the Hidden City of Paititi.

Metro Exodus:

It’s a slower paced, open-world single-player survival shooter. Ray tracing is implemented as global illumination, not reflections.

  • Global illumination provides if there’s a light source, anything that falls in the path of that source’s lighting will be illuminated and will cast shadows. But this kind of lighting is limited, it lacks realism and depth, it does not include indirect illumination.
  • In real life, light doesn’t just emit from surfaces, hit something then disappear. Instead, light reflects off surfaces onto other surfaces.

Available in two modes: High and Ultra.

Ring of Elysium:

Free to play Battle Royale game developed by Arena Studio and published by Tencent.

Synced: Off Planet:

Off-Planet, we’ve partnered with Tencent Next Studios to bring realistic, immersive real-time ray-traced shadows and reflections to the game’s world.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2

Action role-playing video game developed by Hardsuit Labs and published by Paradox Interactive. At the start of Bloodlines 2, your character is caught up in the middle of a mass embrace—a group of vampires kidnapping and forcibly turning humans into vampires. It’s a huge no-no to even turn one human into a vampire without permission from a city’s Primogen (clan leader) or Prince (ruler of a city). If you get caught, it usually means the final death for both the sire and their childe.

Watch Dogs: Legion

An action-adventure game developed by Ubisoft Toronto and published by Ubisoft. It will be the third instalment in the Watch Dogs series and the sequel to Watch Dogs 2

Xuan-Yuan Sword VII:

Xuan-Yuan Sword VII is an ARPG rooted in Chinese history and mythology. Players take on the role of Taishi Zhao, a calm and reliable swordsman who was accidentally involved in a tragic fate. To protect his beloved family, he starts a journey in this chaotic realm to find the truth.

Conclusion:

Enabled ray traced global illumination doesn’t tank performance to anywhere near the degree of ray traced reflections in Battlefield V. Looking at the RTX High results, we only saw a 17% increase in performance from disabling RTX at 1080p for the RTX 2080 Ti. This grows slightly to 21% for both the RTX 2080 and RTX 2070, and 24% for the RTX 2060.
